Datasets with Visual Representation

This week I collected various datasets with the purpose of eventually making the data into informational charts with interesting backstories.

Geographic Dataset

For this set of data I searched tripadvisor.com for the top wineries in Connecticut. I deleted any wineries that had less than 5 reviews to ensure accuracy. My next step was to use latlog.net to enter the address of each winery and find the latitude and longitude coordinates.

Data provided by https://www.latlong.net/

With this data I am hoping to create a comprehensive map of the top wineries in Connecticut. It would be interesting to know which counties have the most top rated wineries in the state.

In order to make sure my data is trustworthy, I will cross-check my data to make sure that the latitudes/longitudes are located in the proper corresponding county. I will also check to make sure that the wineries are still operational.

Reliable Source Dataset

The Numbers is a free dataset source that provides public box office earnings. I used this resource to collect datasets from the box office weekend earnings of March 13th, 2020 and the weekend box office earnings of March 15th, 2019.

With this dataset I am hoping to potentially compare the Top 10 weekend earnings of March 13th, 2020 and March 15th, 2019 to see if the beginning of the pandemic effected movie-goers. Another question I can hopefully answer is which, if any, of the major movie distributors (i.e. Walt Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal etc.) have been impacted by the beginning of the pandemic.

In order to ensure that my data is accurate, I will cross check with other box office databases and conduct additional research to make sure that the films included align with the correct distributor.

Chart Type Options: bar chart horizontal

Dataset from Scratch

I collected data from touringplans.com to find ratings of restaurants within 4 of the Disney World Parks located in Orlando, FL. My dataset only includes restaurants recorded on touringplans.com, restaurants that provide table service (no food carts allowed!). Abbreviations are included with a key below.

  • MK- Magic Kingdom
  • EP- Epcot
  • HS- Hollywood Studios
  • AK- Animal Kingdom

With this dataset I am hoping to find which Disney Park has the highest rated restaurants and which Disney Park has the lowest rated restaurants according to touringplans.com

In order to make my chart trustworthy, I limited my information by excluding restaurants in hotels or resorts as they do not typically count toward the parks themselves. I will also cross-check my data in order to confirm that the restaurants listed are in the correct parks and are operational.

Chart Type Options: bar chart vertical, bar chart horizontal
